This topic is worth another visit. Knowing when to repaint a home’s exterior is usually fairly obvious. But how do you know when you need a new interior paint job? Besides the obvious (dings and scuffs), there are more subtle signs that may indicate that the paint is “distressed” and needs a change:
- Tiny flakes coming off when touched
- Cracking or peeling
- Chalky appearance
- Walls don’t wash any more (small scuffs and spots are no longer easy to wipe off)
- Colour fading (check behind a picture hanging on the wall and see if there’s a difference)
- Walls look “dingy”
- Sheen is inconsistent
- Colour itself is “out of date”
- Mildew or moisture damage (little black spots, staining, bubbling or swelling)
If your interior paint job is more than 5 years old, you may want to check for some of the signs listed above, especially in high traffic areas and places exposed to moisture (don’t forget to check around doors and windows). The good news is that today’s paint formulas are considerably more durable, and a new paint job with today’s paints can last 10 years or more.
And you’d be surprised how good you’ll feel living in a freshly painted home – there’s nothing quite like that fresh and renewed feeling!
